Storms silent and storms dancing....a correct description for my life after coming out...though gay angel emerged from me like a neonate the cute angel was young..very young..the baby needs some nutrition...a sweet milk from a mother...i,like a women after conceiving seemed very tired...very,very tired...i like a mother nurtured my gay angel...after the fact that my label as a gay reached my father's ears ,he like a muddy pot died after a clash, remained as a broken daddy...i had the duty to make him to understand about me..understand about me clearly...

It was his initial decision of counseling which made me to meet a church father....i narrated him the whole events and told him about my sexuality...his suggestion was that it can change..homosexuality is just an changing phase of life...but whenever i met him (the counseling was done thrice) again it was the sense of happiness and smile that prevailed in my face..when he asked me the reason and conveying his idea about my smile that it arises from my "changed" heart with an opposite force to his words,i replied him.."I,I am a gay...i am clearly a gay"......

My father was in his height of sadness...he asked me to consult a doctor to change myself...one of our family friend's who came to know about that i am a gay had once asked me "Why are you resisting the change?? why are you not consulting any doctors to get rid of this gayness..?"..i replied him calmly.."Uncle, please understand.I never wish to yield myself as a test animal..none know about homosexuality in clear..and it is not a disease...it was an old notion...so i never wish to give myself as a scapegoat, as a test animal for those people who say that homosexuality is a disease..".....

It took several months for my father to understand me..now he is OK with that..not completely..i feel i have to wait with patience...patience will win one day.....i had explained about me completely to him and what i feel...

Yes..it take a lot of time....the friends who discriminated me felt sorry for their act and again started a close friendship with me..though they feel that they are straight i usually say about my experiences and life as a gay to them....many friends of me came to know that i am a gay, but whatever they may feel about me, they are not discriminating me now...if they didn't like it they still love a feel of friendship with me..maybe a blessing for me....

My dad even accepted that if i get anyone whom i can call "partner", to settle with my partner..though he can't understand my feelings completely my dad accepted myself...my face...my real face..my dear child,the gay angel....

Whatever may be i must say how i had survived in those six months of discrimination...it was rude...but i loved it..it only transformed me to a person writing this stuff...i am a butterfly...i wish to fly....i must say thanks to bacteria...seems mad??..he-he..that was the reality....whenever i reared bacteria in that labs under those chambers i felt myself freed...i saw something good sprouting inside me whenever i see a colony of bacteria germinated in the petri plate..he- he..seems mad..but real....my tears, wet tears all vaporized whenever i reared those cultures...maybe you can call this "shift to other plane"...

I have to say thanks to the social networking sites for at least providing me to express what i feel..though i may not perceive the physical sense of thousands of members of those sites whenever i expressed myself in those communities via posts expressing myself it felt myself loved...my gay angel growing alive....i have came to know that there are and more people other than me in this world who are experiencing like me..feeling like me...one such was one my inspiration Harish Iyer....

I came to know about him..his experiences..his life...pains make a person to adopt a face of resistance..i obtained such an inspiration from him..frankly saying i was much shocked when i read his story...but the way how he struggled with all those oppositions provided me another dimension for seeing my problems....

Another one i must indicate is Audre Lorde..the mother,lesbian,warrior,poet....the greatest american feminist....her thoughts and her words shaped me...seeded light inside of me...

Also i must mention about Valerie Solanas,the American radical feminist....her path of life..her thought..her ideas..her manifesto called SCUM manifesto was such an great inspiration for me to fight in this world with my gay angel...such fierce and strong words, like the storms prior to rain cultivated my mind...to a great extent and shaped me...shaped myself....

And the life of Andrea Dworkin, the American radical feminist was such an great inspiration for me..a inspiration to fight as a warrior...warrior with proud and out....

அமெரிக்காவின் சாதுரியமான வெளியுறவு முறையில் இருக்கும் ஆனைத்து முறைகேடான விஷயங்கள் வெளியானது, துனிசியாவின் சீர்கேடான மன்னராட்சி முடிவுக்கு வந்தது, வெறும் 15 கோப்புறைகள் மூலம் எல்லா அரேபியா நாடுகளின் மனித உரிமை மீறல்கள், ஊழல் மற்றும் பல அடக்குமுறைகளை துனிலீக்ஸ் (Tunileaks) மூலம் வெளிச்சத்திற்கு கொண்டு வந்தது, ரஷ்ய அமெரிக்க இடையில் இருக்கும் போலியான உறவுமுறை முடிவுக்கு வந்து பல நாடுகளும் அமெரிக்க ஒரு நம்பகமான நாடு இல்லை என்றும் NATO இன்று கலைந்து விடும் அபாயம், மற்றும் சீனாவின் மனித உரிமை மீறல் தான் அடுத்த வல்லரசு ஆகவேண்டும் என்ற பெரும் ஓட்டம், இந்தியாவின் அரசியல் முறைகேடுகள், இந்திரா காந்தியை கொலை செய்ய பாகிஸ்தானின் பங்கு என பல ஆதிக்க நாடுகளின் ரகசிய அரசியல் முறையையும் அம்பலமாகி உலகையே திருப்பி போட்ட எல்லா கிளர்ச்சிக்கும் காரணம் 24 வயது "பிராட்லி மான்னிங்" என்ற நபர் ஈராக்கில் விக்கிலீக்சுக்கு வெளியிட்ட செய்தியே.

கடந்த ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் மன்னிங்கின் தூக்கு தண்டனையை குறைத்து அமெரிக்க அரசு பிராட்லி மன்னிங்கை 35 வருடங்கள் சிறையில் அடைத்தது, இந்த தீர்ப்பு வெளியான ஒரு சில வினாடிகளில் பிராட்லி மன்னிங் தான் ஒரு பெண்ணாக வாழ விரும்புவதாகவும், சிறு வயது முதல் தன்னை ஒரு ஆண் என்று உணர்ந்ததை விட பெண் என்று தான் அதிகம் உணர்வதாக கூறினார்.

மேலும் தான் விடுத்த "என் வாழ்க்கையின் அடுத்த கட்டம் " என்ற பொது அறிக்கையில்:

எனக்கு கடந்த மூன்று வருடமாக ஆதரவளித்து வரும் அனைவருக்கும் என் நன்றிகள், கடுமையான சொதனைக் காலங்களில் நீங்கள் எனக்கு அனுப்பிய கடிதங்களும், எனக்காக நடத்திய போராட்டங்களும், செய்த பிரச்சாரங்களும் எனக்கு மேலும் அதிக தைரியம் தருகிறது. எனக்காக மிகவும் தைரியத்துடன் அரசாங்கத்தை எதிர்த்து போராடியவர்கள், என் பாதுகாப்பு நிதிக்காக உதவியவர்கள், என் வழக்கின் காரணமாக நீதிமன்றத்தில் காத்து இருந்த மக்கள், என் வழக்கை பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தி எனக்காக சட்ட பிரதிநிதித்துவம் செய்யும் "Bradley Manning Support Network" என் ஆதரவாளர்கள் ஆனைவருக்கும் நான் கடமைபட்டுள்ளேன்.

என் வாழ்க்கையில் அடுத்த கட்ட நகர்வாக, நான் எல்லோரும் என் உண்மையான அடையாளத்தை தெரிவிக்க விரும்புகிறேன் " நான் செல்சியா மானிங்" நான் ஒரு பெண். இதை நான் குழந்தை பருவத்தில் இருந்தே உணர்ந்தேன். இதற்கான ஹார்மோன் சிகிச்சை விரைவில் தொடங்க இருக்கிறேன். என்னுடைய இந்த மாற்றத்தை நீங்கள் ஆதரிப்பீர்கள் என்று நம்புகிறேன். இன்று முதல் என்னுடைய பெண்மை பிரதிபெயரை பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும் என்றும் (வரையறை வசதி மற்றும் உத்தியோகபூர்வ மின்னஞ்சல் தவிர) என்னை செல்சியா ஈ மானிங் என்று அழைக்கவும். என் ஆதரவாளர்களிடம் இருந்து கடிதங்களை பெற்று மீண்டும் எழுத வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும் என்று எதிர்நோக்குகிறோம்.

இந்த விசயத்தை ஏன் முன்பே செல்சிய தெரிவிக்கவில்லை என்றால் " இன்றைய சூழ்நிலையில் குற்றவாளி செய்த குற்றத்தை விட குற்றம் நிருபிக்க படும் முன்னரே அந்த நபரின் பாலினம், நிறம், பாலின ஈர்ப்பு என்பது ஒரு கேலிக்குரிய, விவதத்திகுரிய விசயமாக மாற்றப்படுகிறது, இவன் இந்த பாலினத்தில் இருந்ததால் தான் இந்த தவறு செய்தான் என்று பலருடைய வாதமும் அமைந்துவிடும் மேலும் தான் குற்றங்களை வெள்ளிச்சம் போட்டு கட்டியது ஒரு தவறு இல்லை என்றும் என்னால் பாலின சிறுபான்மையினரான திருனர் சமூகத்திற்கு அவப்பெயர் வரகூடாது என்றும் இந்த தருணத்தில் பொது தளத்தில் தனக்கு கிடைத்த வாய்ப்பை பயன் படுத்தி இந்த உண்மையை பிரகடனப் படுத்தியதாக செல்சியா தெரிவித்தார். மேலும் தான் பெண்மையை போற்றும் வகையில் தன் கல்லூரி பருவவத்தில் ஒரு பெண் போல வேடமிட்ட சில புகைப்படங்களையும் வெளியிட்டார். இதை அறிவித்த ஒரு சில வினாடிகளில் விக்கிபீடிய மற்றும் பல சமுக வலை தளங்களில் பிராட்லியின் பெயர் செல்சியா என்று மாற்றப்பட்டது, அணைத்து ஊடகங்களும் ஒரு பெண் பால் அடையாளத்துடன் மன்னிங் தொடர்புடைய செய்தியை வெளியிடுகிறது. இன்று செல்சியா உலகளாவிய திருனர் சமூகத்தின் முன்மாதிரியாக பேசபடுகிறார்.

செல்சியாவின் இந்த அறிக்கை சட்ட ரீதியாக சிறை சார்ந்து திருனர் பாதுகாப்பு தொடர்புடைய அமெரிக்க சட்ட சாசனம் மற்றும் அமெரிக்க இராணுவ பாதுகாப்பு படை சாசனத்தை கேள்விக்குறியாக்கி உள்ளது. பொதுவாக பாலின-பதட்டநிலை (Gender-Dysphoria) என்று அறியப்படும் இந்த நிலையை சென்ற ஆண்டு தான் அமெரிக்க மனோதத்துவ சங்கம் உளபிறழ்சி (Mental Disorder) என்ற பட்டியலில் இருந்து மாற்றி பாலின-பதட்டநிலை (Gender-Dysphoria) என்று அறிவித்தது. இதன் படி திருனராக உணரும் நபர் தகுந்த ஹார்மோன் சிகிச்சை பெற வேண்டும் தேவையான சிகிச்சை இல்லாமல் போனால் இது மணக்கவலை, தற்கொலை என்று பலவற்றிக்கும் தூண்டி கடுமையான உளவியல் துயரத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும்.

அமெரிக்க இராணுவ அதிகாரிகள் வெளியிட்ட பொது அறிக்கையில் பாலினம் சார்ந்து எந்த சிகிச்சை முறையையோ,வசதியோ பாதுகாப்பு படை சிறைகள் வழங்காது என்று தெரிவிகப்பட்டது. ஆனால் அமெரிக்காவின் எட்டாவது அரசியலமைப்பின் திருத்தம் படி

சிறைச்சாலைகள் மற்றும் மாநில முகவர் மத்திய பணியகம் உத்தியோகபூர்வ கொள்கையில் பாலின பதட்டநிலை சிகிச்சை மற்றும் அவர்களுக்கு தேவையான மருத்துவம், பாதுகாப்பு வழங்க ஆணை பிறப்பிக்க பட்டு உள்ளது, மேலும் நீதிமன்றங்கள் இதை தொடர்ந்து கண்காணித்து வருகிறது. இந்நிலையில் சிறையில் இருக்கும் திருனருக்கும் இனி பிற பாலினத்தவரை போல அணைத்து வசதிகளும் கிடைப்பது ஊரிதியாகியுள்ளது.

இனி பெண்ணாக வாழப் போகும் செல்சியாவின் பாதுகாப்பை பல சமூக நல ஆர்வலர்களும் கண்காணித்து வருகின்றனர். மனித உரிமைகளின் கடவுள் போல் நடந்து கொண்ட அமெரிக்காவின் நிலை இது தான் என்று ரஷ்ய அதிபர் விளாடிமிர் புடின் கூறியுள்ளார்.

சில சமயம் எந்த வேருபாடும்மற்ற ஒரு சுதந்திர பூமியை உருவாக்க ஒரு கடுமையான, பலர் மனதையும் கனக்க செய்யும் ஒரு விலையை கொடுக்க நேரிடும், நான் சிறையில் உயிர் நீத்தாலும் உலகிக்கு ஒரு உண்மையை சொல்லி வெளிப்படையான நல்ல ஒரு வாழ்விடம் அமைய வழிவகுத்த அமைதியுடம் உயிர்நீப்பேன் என்றார் செல்சியா இன்று முக்கியமாக அரேபியா நாட்டின் சமூக ஆர்வலர்கள் செல்சியாவை தங்கள் விடிவெள்ளியாக காண்கின்றனர்.

ஆம் உலகின் அமைதிக்காக ஒரு வகையில் பாடுபடும் நாம் ஆனைவரும் ஒரு வகையில் செல்சியா மன்னிங் தான் ஒரு ஆப்ரிக்க சிறுவன் சொன்னது இது.

ரஷ்யாவின் அடக்குமுறை

கடந்த ஜூலை 29 ரஷ்ய அதிபர் விளாடிமிர் புடின் "சிறார்களுக்கு மத்தியில் பாரம்பரியம் அல்லாத பாலியல் உறவுகலுக்கு பிரச்சாரத் தடை"விதிக்கும் மசோதாவில் கையெழுத்திட்டார் , பாரம்பரியம் அல்லாத LGBT உறவுகளை இது குறிக்கும் என்று அவர் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

1993-ஆம் ரஷ்யாவில் ஒருபால் புணர்ச்சி சட்ட ரீதியாக தவறில்லை என்று பிரகடனபடுத்தப் பட்டது ஆனால் இன்றுவரை அங்கு ஒருபால் திருமணங்கள் மற்றும் ஒருபால் காதல் சட்டப்படி குற்றம்.

இந்த சட்டத்தின்படி ஒருபால் ஈர்ப்பு மற்றும் திருனர் உரிமை தொடர்பான எந்த செய்தியையும், விழிப்புணர்வையும், எந்த வகையிலும் வெளிபடுத்தும் முயற்சியில் ஈடுபடும் ரஷியர்கள் மட்டுமல்லாமல்,வெளிநாட்டு சுற்றுலா பயணிகளும் தண்டிக்கப்படும் நிலை உள்ளது,பெரிய அபராதம் தொடங்கி கடும் சிறை தண்டனை வரை இந்த சட்டத்தில் அடங்கும். பாரம்பரிய வானவில் LGBT ஊர்வலம் நடத்த கடுமையான தடை விதிகப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ரஷ்யாவின், கோச்சியில் 2014இல் நடைபெற இருக்கும் குளிர்கால ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டிகளில் பங்கேற்கும் ஒருபால் ஈர்ப்பு வீரர்களுக்கு பாதுகாப்பு கிடைக்காத நிலை இந்த சட்டத்தின் மூலம் உருவாகியுள்ளது. ஒருபால் ஈர்ப்புடைய போட்டியாளர்கள், மற்றும் அவர்களின் ஆதரவாளர்கள் பொது இடத்தில போட்டியில் வெற்றி பெற்ற பின்பு வானவில் கொடியை உடலில் போர்த்தி வெற்றியை கொண்டாடுவதற்கு தடை மற்றும் ஒருபால் காதலர்களுக்கு முத்தம் கொடுப்பதக்கு தடை அப்படி போட்டியாளர்கள் அத்துமீறினால் தண்டனைக்கு ஆட்படுத்தப்படும் நிலைமை உருவாகியிருக்கிறது அதனால் “2014 ரஷ்சிய ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டிகளை புறக்கணியுங்கள்” என்று உலகம் முழுவதும் இருக்கும் ஒருபாலீர்பு நலன் சார்ந்த அமைப்புகள் போட்டிக்கு நிதி உதவி வழங்கும் நிறுவனங்கள் மற்றும் பங்குபெறும் வீரர்களுக்கு கோரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளனர்.

இந்நிலையில் சமிபத்தில் வெளியான இந்த அரசானைக்கு பிரிட்டன் , அமெரிக்கா , கனடாவில் உள்ளிட்ட நாடுகள், பல மனித உரிமை ஆர்வலர்கள் மற்றும் சர்வதேச ஓலிம்பிக் செயற்குழு என பலதரப்பினர்களும் கடும் கண்டனம் தெரிவித்து உள்ளனர்.

அமெரிக்க அதிபர் ஓபாமா "இந்த பிற்போக்குதனமான செயல் தனக்கு வருதம்மளிபதாக கூறியுள்ளார், மேலும் அமெரிக்க விளையாட்டு வீரர்கள் மிக கடினமாக பயிற்சி எடுத்து ஒலிம்பிக்ஸ்காக தயாராகி வரும் இந்த நேரத்தில் இது போன்ற விஷயங்கள் அவர்களின் தனியுறிமையை பறிப்பதாக உள்ளது அதனால் இதை ரஷ்யா கவனத்தில் கொள்ளவேண்டும்" என்றார்.

சர்வதேச ஓலிம்பிக் செயற்குழுவின் முதல்வர் ஜாக்வோஸ் ரோச்சி " கோச்சியில் 2014இல் நடைபெற இருக்கும் குளிர்கால ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டிகளில் பங்கேற்கும் விளையாட்டு வீரர்களை நிறம், மதம் , நாடு, பாலினம், பாலினஈர்பு என்று எந்த பேதமும் இல்லாமல் ரஷ்ய அரசு கவனிக்க வேண்டும். விளையாட்டு என்பது ஒரு தனிநபர் உரிமை அதை எந்த அடிப்படையிலும் வேறுபடுத்தி ஒரு நபரை ஒதுக்க கூடாது என்றார். மேலும் ரஷ்ய அரசாங்கத்திடம் இருந்து இந்த சட்டத்தை போட்டி நடக்கும் நாட்களில் விலக்கி வைக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் ரஷ்ய அரசாங்கம் அணைத்து வகையான மக்களுக்கும் பாதுகாப்பு கிடைக்க எழுத்து பூர்வ பதில் மற்றும் ஆணையை தங்களுக்கு அனுப்ப வேண்டும் என்று கூறினார்.

இந்த சட்டத்தை, இதுவரை ரஷ்யா பொருட்படுத்தவில்லை.அவர்கள் ஒலிம்பிக் போட்டிகளின் ஏற்பாட்டில் தீவிரமாக ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர். இந்த சட்டத்தில் இதுவரை ஆறு நபர்களை கைது செய்துள்ளனர், இது தவிர்த்து ஒருபால் உரிமை குறித்து ஆவணப்படம் எடுக்க முயன்ற நான்கு வெளிநாட்டு பயணிகளையும் கைது செய்துள்ளனர். எட்டு LGBT சமூக ஆர்வலர்களையும் தண்டனைக்கு உட்படுத்தி உள்ளனர்.

இதுகுறித்து ரஷ்யாவின் விளையாட்டு துறை அமைச்சர் வித்தாலி மூட்கோ " ரஷ்ய நாட்டின் சட்டத்தை ஒலிம்பிக்கில் பங்கு பெரும் ஆனைத்து வீரர்களும் பின்பற்ற வேண்டும், எந்த காரணத்தை கொண்டும் ரஷ்ய அரசாங்கம் பிறப்பிய மசோதாவை திருத்தி சட்டத்தை பின்வாங்காது, தனிப்பட்ட நபர்களின் உணர்வுகளை ஆரசு அந்நபர்கள் தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் வைத்திருக்கும் வரையில் மதிக்கும் " என்றார்.

ரஷ்யாவின் இந்த சட்டத்தை அந்நாட்டின் தாராளவாதிகள் மற்றும் சமூக ஆர்வலர்கள் சீற்றம் கொண்டு எதிர்த்து வருகின்றனர், 78 சதவீதம் ரஷ்ய மக்கள் ஓரின பிரச்சாரத்தை குறைக்க அரசாங்கம் எடுக்கும் முயற்சிகலுக்கு ஆதரவு தெரிவித்துள்ளனர். பெரும்பாலான மக்கள் இதை கண்டுகொள்ளவேயில்லை.

லெனினியம், மார்க்சிய கருத்துக்கள் என்று பொதுவுடைமை சிந்தனைகள் தழைத்து வளர்ந்த இந்த நாடு ஏனோ ஒருபால் விரும்பிகளின் நலனில் மட்டும் விரோதமான செயலில் ஈடுபடுகிறது. அதே நேரத்தில் முதலாளித்துவ நாடுகளான அமெரிக்கா மற்றும் பிரிட்டன் இந்த விஷயத்தில் அம்மக்கள் நலனை முன்னிறுத்தி சட்டங்களை இயற்றி வருகிறது.

No words can express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the overwhelming support and kindness everybody showed to Srishti.

One by one each days flew by, 2 years of memories, that you shared with Srishti. From big events and holidays, to simple daily pleasures. Some tearful times along life's way, some joys that cant be measured. 2 years now gone, but still our gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and trying to create a space to celebrate who we are.

This 2 years of service made us to take a baby step to bring up a social space for LGBTQI & Genderqueer task in Madurai.

The Alan Turning Rainbow festival 2012 -13 educated 8000 students in Madurai.

Celebrated The Asia's first Genderqueer festival.

Thanks TOI Madurai

Conducted 25 seminars & Created regional resources, coined Tamil terms for genderqueer people.

Conducted gender & philosophy class for Ministry of education (Tamil Dept) Singapore, EMRC (The Educational Multimedia Research Centre) of Madurai.

Helping 2 women scholars do to P.hd in genderqueer studies.

Launched 24 hours helpline for Genderqueer & LGBTQI people in India.

Assisted with the project and documentation

work of several students of Mass Media Communication and Social work dept from MCC College, Manipal University, Uppsala University Sweden, The American College, Madurai, Bowdoin College, New England and Amrita Vishwa Vidhya peetam.

Of-course number doesn't matter for Srishti Madurai but we are happy that we reached more young hearts in Madurai during Srishti's 2nd birthday.

Srishti offered 1 free seat for a student in SRM University, helping aid & livelihood support for 1 Transmen in Madurai, 1 free school seat for a student in Mahatma schools, mdu, livelihood help for 5 old LGBT people, conducted free yoga classes for 75 village children.

Srishti Madurai, a students group and the first genderqueer and lesbian, gay, bisexual,

transgender, queer and Intersex (LGBTQI) has launched a 24 hours helpline in Madurai for

the community and others.

"Apart from community people even public who wish to know information on LGBTQI can

understanding to talk can save a life,"

I am a female - Bradley Manning

Bradley Manning is now Chelsea Manning.

“As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me,” Manning said in a statement read during an exclusive TODAY show interview with lawyer David Coombs. “I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way I have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible.”

While Fort Leavenworth, the prison where Manning will serve her sentence, does not offer hormone therapy, Coombs told host Savannah Guthrie he would fight to ensure his client received the medical treatment she needed. He also said he and Manning had not discussed sex reassignment surgery, and that getting her access to the needed hormones is his priority at this time.

Asked why Chelsea Manning had not made a statement about her gender before the trial was over, Coombs said, “She didn’t want this to be something that overshadowed the case.”

Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday for the largest leak in U.S. history, a sentence that could set the tone of future prosecutions of those who leak classified information. The 25-year-old was convicted of 20 criminal counts, including espionage and disobeying orders, for providing 700,000 classified documents to WikiLeaks.

Coombs and the defense team cited Manning’s struggle with shame and confusion over her gender identity as a mitigating factor during sentencing proceedings. Her identity as a trans-woman first became a topic of discussion in the case after chat logs with government informant and hacker Adrian Lamo featuring statements about gender were leaked to the public.

The defense introduced a photo Manning emailed to her supervisor, Master Sgt Paul Adkins, with the subject line “my problem.” It showed Manning in a blonde wig and wearing lipstick. Clinical Psychiatrist Michael Worsley, who treated Manning in Iraq, also testified about how the military’s “hypermasculine environment” and hostility towards LGBT soldiers could have contributed to Manning’s depression and sense of isolation

Dr. David Moulton, the forensic psychologist assigned to review Manning’s case, said that Manning was suffering from gender identity disorder, a diagnosis supported by a military sanity board.

The United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth responded to Manning’s announcement in a statement. “The Army does not provide hormone therapy or sex-reassignment surgery for gender identity disorder.” Citing a policy of non-discrimination based on race, rank, ethnicity or sexual orientation – but not gender identity – the the USDB statement said that, “All inmates are considered soldiers and are treated as such with access to mental health professionals, including a psychiatrist, psychologist, social workers and behavioral science noncommissioned officers with experience in addressing the needs of military personnel in pre- and post-trial confinement.”

Despite the challenges ahead for Chelsea Manning, “The ultimate goal is to be comfortable in her skin,” Coombs said.

Gender-Neutral Pronouns - Carleton College Student Organization

pronouns are important -- probably more important than many of us think.

When we we use pronouns like "she" or "he" to identify a person, we might be making an assumption about that person's gender that differs from their preferred gender identity. Some people express their gender identity ambiguously, meaning you might not know which pronoun to use just by looking at them and have to make an assumption. For other people, appearances can be deceiving-- even people who clearly look to be one gender may identify as a different gender than you would assume. When someone has a different gender identity than you would assume that means a different pronoun.

So, how do we avoid making incorrect assumptions about gender pronouns? ASK! Or, use gender-neutral pronouns, like "they" or "them."

We get that asking for people's pronouns could be awkward. Here are some tips to help you become a kick ass pronoun ask-er:

Kick things off by asking: "Do you have a preferred pronoun?"

Recognize that while this might make some people confused, it's also an awesome opportunity to explain why you're doing it, and it will really mean something to those who have been mis-identified or care about the issue.

Don't expect that if you ask once, you're set forever -- people's (gender) identities can change, so check in!

One great way to ask for preferred pronouns is to incorporate preferred pronoun into introductions, particularly in student organization meetings. So, for example, you could say, "Hey, I'm Schiller, I'm from Germany, I'm a super-senior, English and Philosophy double major and my preferred pronouns are he/him." See, wasn't that easy? Your turn!

1. What do you mean by gender-neutral pronouns?

Loosely speaking, a pronoun is a part of speech that takes the place of other nouns. Some pronouns are: I, we, he, she, all, it, they, their, etc.

Gendered pronouns are those that indicate gender: he, she, him, her, hers, his, himself and herself. All others, like "it, "one," and "they," are gender-neutral.

You probably already use some gender-neutral pronouns: they, their, and them. Suppose you are expecting a call from someone of unknown gender... you might say something like:

"If the person from the insurance company calls, tell them I'll call them back tomorrow."

2. Why would people feel uncomfortable about a gendered (male or female) pronoun?

For many people, gender is simple and clear-cut: either gender identity aligns with biological sex or gender presentation falls closely enough within traditional norms that most people assume the appropriate “he” or “she.” Many other individuals, however, present their gender identity and expression ambiguously, causing traditional assumptions about gender to be irrelevant or incorrect. Additionally, some individuals may feel more comfortable using a pronoun different from the one associated with their biological sex or apparent gender expression. Moreover, gendered pronouns like “he” and “she” are uncomfortable and limiting for some who prefer gender-neutral pronouns (see attachment). Whatever the case, it quickly becomes uncomfortable for these students when the larger community assumes a pronoun with which they do not identify.

3. So what are some examples of gender-neutral pronouns?

"They" and "ze" are some of the more common forms of gender-neutral pronouns.
