Members of LGBT community to assemble in Madurai for a first of its kind programme.

Social discrimination is one of the biggest worries the LGBT community faces. Inconspicuous circles have been formed in the city to create awareness and fight for their rights. Now, it looks like the temple town is all set to welcome the change with open arms by celebrating Asia’s first international gender queer pride parade, the Alan Turing Rainbow Festival. This will also coincide with an international queer film screening festival in Madurai from June 23.

The aim of the parade, according to the organisers, is to expose the diversity of sexualities other than gay/lesbian/straight/bisexual or gender outside of male/female/transwoman. Many people fall outside the gender-binary of male or female and, given the common ignorance about the existence of more than 20 types of genders, the issues of those people are not understood even within the mainstream LGBTQI community.

Srishti, the first LGBTQI resource circle of Madurai and Coimbatore, is organizing the event to address the issues of such people who are otherwise compelled to live a life they don’t want to.

The film screenings, from June 23 to July 29, organised in collaboration with some city schools and colleges, will also be the first initiative of this kind in Madurai. The idea is to generate interest in queer issues and act as a catalyst for the queer movement to derive its cultural significance and context. Only when more awareness on the real issues of LGBTQI is spread to more remote places will the wrong image of "western impact" dissolve.

The programme includes some novel initiatives such as the Rainbow Tour to explore the queer themes, tracing them to the Sangam age.

In the event Rainbow Village, student volunteers will create awareness through discussions and art activities in some selected villages around Madurai. There will be a special session on feminism and queer issues.

In the Rainbow Art Festival, the life, values, and sexual politics of queers will be explored via drama, paintings, poetry, dance and several other art forms. A special Tamil drama about stonewall issues has also been planned. In the session ‘Against the commercialization of queers’, the commercializing aspects of the HIV/AIDS issue, cultural issues and racism and capitalism will be highlighted. The Green Rainbow festival aims to move beyond the dualisms of straight/queer, male/female, nature/artificial, human/nature, mind/body in approaching ecology.

The Rainbow Science event will explain what science, psychology, and biology say about queers while exposing the myths about them.

The organising committee for this event consists of Anjali Gopalan (Director, NAZ foundation), Leena Manimekalai (independent filmmaker, poet and actor), David Bonk of Universal Music & Panik band, and other reputed personalities.

How many of us are aware of the fact that there are more than 20 types of genders apart from male and female? If such awareness were available then it might have saved lot of lives and reduced the discrimination against and within queer community.

Srishti is the first LGBTQ resource circle of Madurai & Coimbatore. Srishti aim to build a world based on equality, reciprocity, and interdependence, where people are free to express their sexuality as part of their broader human rights.
Srishti in view of these problems is planning to conduct the Alan Turing Rainbow festival to mark the birth centenary celebrations of Alan Turing, His contributions and awareness on the prejudice against queers. Moreover Asia’s first gender queer pride festival are planned to spread the knowledge and awareness on the diversity of gender and sexuality. Also for the first time in Madurai, the International film screening fest is planned to celebrated on 28th July 2012
The gender queer rainbow parade is planned to be celebrated on 29th July and it is from Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple to Gandhi museum.

Being a non-metro city it is the first time the pride parade is organized in Madurai. Srishti, runned only by the student volunteers requires lot of support to break the taboo nature of the subject via these activities. The program is supported by the famous film maker Leena Manimekalai and Anjali Gopalan, One of the most influential persons as listed by Times magazine and the one whose case filings against the section 377 had resulted in the decriminalization against homosexuality in India.
The way long pride month celebrations are starting from 22nd june to 29th july seminars & interactive session on Gender & sexuality are planned to be held at various schools & colleges in Madurai, all we need now is your support & help us to serve for a real humanitarian cause.

மதுரையின் முதல் "துரிங் வானவில் திருவிழா "

அன்பினத்தவற்கு,

கி.பி 2500-ஆம் வருடம் நம் மனித சமூகம் எட்டியிருக்க வேண்டிய அதிநவீன வளர்ச்சியினை ஐம்பது எட்டு வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பே கொடுக்க வல்ல ஒரு அதிமேதாவியை நம் அறியாமை கொன்று விட்டது.

தத்துவவியலின் விடிவெள்ளி,கணினி அறிவியலின் தந்தை, தர்க்கத்தின் அதிபதி, மறையீட்டியலின் அரசர், செயற்கை நுண்ணறிவின் கடவுள், உயிரின அமைப்பியலின் முன்னோடி என்று பல்துறை அறிவை உள்ளடக்கிய ஒரு அரும் பெரும் மேதாவி.!-அவர் தான் ஆலன் துரிங்.
ஒரு மனிதன் ஆயிரம் வருடம் வாழ்ந்தாலும் சாதிக்க இயலாத விஷயங்களை, நாற்பத்து ஓரு வயதிற்குள் எந்த வாய்ப்புமில்லாமல் சாதித்து காட்டியவர் துரிங். பாலின பாகுபாடு என்ற ஒரே காரணத்தால் அவரின் தனி சுதந்திரம் பறிக்கப்பட்டு மிக ஆழ்ந்த துயரங்களில் வாழ்ந்த இவரின் நூற்றாண்டு வருடமிது.

அவரை கொன்ற அறியாமை நம் சமூகத்திலிருந்து விலகி விட்டதா?
இல்லை.!

அவ்வறியாமையை போக்கும் விதமாக ஸ்ருஷ்டி மதுரை என்ற மாணாக்கர் அமைப்பு மதுரையின் முதல் "துரிங் வானவில் திருவிழா " மற்றும் கல்வி பயிற்சி திட்டத்தை அறிமுகபடுதுகின்றது.

இத்திட்டத்தின் கீழ் பல்வேறு ஆளுமை வளர்ச்சி சார்ந்து புது விழுமியத்தை புகட்டும் நிகழ்சிகள் கீழ்வருமாறு:-

Asia's first Genderqueer pride parade in Madurai

Apart from male,femlae there are more than twenty types of genders and more than ten types of sexualities..these genders which fall outside of transsexual themes such as transwomen and transmen constitute the genderqueer spectrum..the trans*....this is the first time a seperate pride parade focussing on genderqueer is happening in Asia... 

நான் ஒருபால் ஈர்ப்புடைய மனிதன் - ரிக்கி மார்ட்டின்

பியூர்டாரிகோவைச் சேர்ந்த பாடகர் ரிக்கி மார்ட்டின் தான் ஒரு 'கே' என்று கூறியுள்ளார். அப்படி இருப்பதற்காக பெருமைப்படுவதாகவும் அவர்  கூறியுள்ளார்.

இதுகுறித்து தனது இணையதளத்தில் அவர் எழுதியுள்ளதாவது...


இப்போது நான் எழுதும் ஒவ்வொரு வார்த்தையும் உண்மையான அன்புடன், ஏற்புத்தன்மையுடன், கடமையுடன் கூடியது. இதை எழுத நான் தயங்கவில்லை. எனது ஆழ் மனதின் அமைதியை இது வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.

நான் ஒருபால் ஈர்ப்புடைய   மனிதன் என்று சொல்லிக் கொள்வதைப் பெருமையாக கருதுகிறேன். இப்படி இருப்பதற்காக நான் பெருமைப்படுகிறேன் என்று கூறியுள்ளார் ரிக்கி.

விரைவில் தனது வாழ்க்கை வரலாற்றை எழுதப் போவதாகவும் கூறியுள்ளார் பாப் பாடகரான ரிக்கி மார்ட்டின். தனது வாழ்க்கையில் இது பெரும் திருப்புமுனையாக அமையும் என்றும் அவர் கூறியுள்ளார்.

இந்த உண்மையை இதுவரை தான் சொல்லாமல் இருந்ததற்கு தனது நண்பர்களே காரணம் என்றும் ரிக்கி கூறியுள்ளார். அப்படிச் சொன்னால் அதை உலகம் ஏற்காது, உண்மையை புரிந்து கொள்ளாது என்று அவர்கள் கூறியதால்தான் தான் இதுவரை சொல்லாமலேயே இருந்ததாக கூறியுள்ளார் ரிக்கி.

வாடகைத்தாய் மூலம் கடந்த 2008ம் ஆண்டு இரட்டைக் குழந்தைக்குத் தந்தையானவர் ரிக்கி என்பது நினைவிருக்கலாம்.

அமெரிக்காவின் இன்றைய பிரச்சினை-பாரக் ஒபாமா

காதல், காமம், நட்பு, பாசம், பாலினம் இதை கடந்த அன்பில் இரு மனம் திளைத்து ஒன்றாவதே திருமணத்தின் லட்சியம். ஆனால் பெரும்பாலும் ஆண்-பெண் உறவுகளை மட்டும் அங்கீகரிக்க கற்று கொண்ட நாம் அவர்களை போலவே நம்முடன் வாழும் பிற பாலினத்தவரின் உணர்வையும் உறவு முறையையும் பெரும்பாலும் அங்கீகரிப்பதில்லை. ஆண் பெண் தவிர்த்து இருபதிற்கும்(20) மேற்பட்ட பாலினங்கள் உள்ளன. இதை தூக்கி கொண்டாடிய நாடுகளுள் முன்னொரு காலத்தில் நம் தேசம் முன்னிலை வகித்தது. 

ஆனால் இவை எல்லாம் தலை கீழாக மாறிவிட்ட இந்நிலையில் இன்று வளர்ச்சியடைந்த நாடாக பேசப்படும் அமெரிக்கா முதல் முறையாக மதத்தை சார்ந்த நாடாக அல்லாமல் மனித நேயம் சார்ந்து யோசிக்க துவங்கியிருக்கிறது.

மே 9 ,2012 அன்று , அமெரிக்க ஜனாதிபதி பாரக் ஒபாமா அவர்கள் வெளியிட்ட செய்தி உலக நாடுகளில் பலருக்கு அதிர்ச்சியையும் சிலருக்கு மகிழச்சியையும் கொடுத்தது. அது அமெரிக்க வரலாறு மற்றும் அமெரிக்க கூட்டாட்சி முறையின் ஜனாதிபதிகளுள் முதல் ஜனாதிபதியாக ஒபாமா , ஒரு பால் ஈர்ப்புடயோரின் வாழ்க்கை முறையையும் திருமணத்தையும் சமூக ரீதியாக மற்றும் சட்ட ரீதியாக அங்கீகரிக்க வேண்டும் என்று குரல் எழுப்பியது.மேலும் அவர்களின் உரிமைகள் காக்கப்படவேண்டும். பாலின மற்றும் மத ரீதியான வேறுபாடுகளை கடந்து அவர்களும் மனிதர்களே!. மனித நேயத்தின் அடிப்படையில் அவர்களுக்கு சம உரிமைகள் வழங்கப்பட்டால் தான் முழுமையான சமூகத்தை நாம் உருவாக்க முடியும். எதிர்பாலினரின் உறவு முறை, வாழ்க்கை முறை ,அவர்களின் குழந்தை வளர்ப்பு, மற்றும் இதர நல் விழுமியங்கள் போலவே ஒருபாலின உறவு ,வாழ்க்கை முறை மற்றும் குழந்தை வளர்ப்பு சார்ந்த விஷயங்கள் அமைந்திருக்கின்றன. ஆதலால் இதை தவறு என்றோ சமூக சீர்குலைவு என்றோ பார்க்க வேண்டாம் என்றார்.

ஒருபால் ஈர்ப்புடயோரின் சமூக நலன் கருதி மாத்யு ஷெபர்ட் வெறுப்பு குற்றங்கள் தடுப்புச்சட்டம் (Mathew Shepard hate crime prevention act,2009), பாலின ரீதியான வேறுபாடு கடந்து விருப்பமுள்ள ஒருபால் ஈர்ப்புடயோருக்கு நாட்டின் பாதுகாப்பு படை, எல்லை படை மற்றும் அனைத்து வேலைகளிலும் உரிமை வழங்கியது மற்றும் அவர்களுக்கான மருத்துவ காப்பீடு திட்டங்கள் முதல் பல நல்ல திட்டங்களை ஒபாமா தனது ஆட்சி முறையில் நிறைவேற்றினார். பாலியல் ரீதியான பாகுபாடுகளை(sexual discrimination) தவிர்க்கும் சட்டங்களை இருபத்துஓன்று அமெரிக்க மாகணங்களும் , பாலின ரீதியான பாகுபாடுகளை(gender discrimination) தவிர்க்க பதினாறு மாகாணங்களும் மற்றும் வாஷிங்டன் டி.சீ - யும் நிறைவேற்றியுள்ளது. இதை தவிர்த்து ஆறு மாகாணங்கள் மற்றும் வாஷிங்டன் டி.சீ - யும் ஒருபால் திருமணங்களை(same sex marriage) அங்கீகரித்துள்ளது.

இது ஒரு புறம் இருக்க கலிபோர்னியா மாகாணத்தில் ஒரு பால் ஈர்ப்புடயோரின் திருமண உரிமைகள் குறித்து தெளிவற்ற நிலவரம், அமெரிக்கா முழுவதும் பதற்றத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது . 1977 ஆம் ஆண்டு கலிபோர்னியா குடியுரிமை சட்டத்தின்(4100) படி திருமணம் என்பது "பொது ஒப்பந்தத்தின் பெயரில் எழும் ஒரு தனிப்பட உறவாகும். மற்றும் இதில் அந்த பொது ஒப்பந்தத்தினை உருவாக்கும் நபர்களின் ஒத்துழைப்பு அவசியமாகும்" என்பதே அதன் வரைமுறையாகும் .ஆனால் பால் மற்றும் பாலினம் சார்பற்ற இந்த சட்டத்தினால் ஒரு பால் ஈர்ப்புடயோர் திருமண உறவில் நுழைய முடியும் என்பது கண்டு கலிபோர்னியா சட்டமன்றம் 1977 ஆம் ஆண்டே அரசியல் வரையறையினை திருத்தியமைத்தது . ஆனால் 1992 ஆம் ஆண்டு "திருமணம்" என்பதன் வரையறை குடும்ப விதிகள் 300-ற்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது. இந்த சட்டத்தின் படி திருமணம் என்பது "ஒரு ஆணுக்கும் ஒரு பெண்ணுக்கும் இடையே பரஸ்பர சம்மதத்தின் அடிப்படையில் எழும் ஒரு பொது ஒப்பந்தமாகும்" . ஆயினும் 308 ஆம் பகுதியின் படி கலிபோர்னியா மாகாணமானது வேறு மாகாணங்களில் நிகழ்ந்த ஒருபால் ஈர்ப்புடயோரின் திருமணங்களை அங்கீகரித்தது. இத்தகு அம்சத்தினை எதிர்க்கும் விதமாய் கூற்று 22 , 2000 கலிபோர்னியாவின் சட்டத்தில் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டது.

ஆனால் 2004 ஆம் ஆண்டு சான் பிரான்சிஸ்கோ நகர மேயர் கவின் நேவ்சொம்(Kevin Nawsom) முதல் முறையாக கலிபோர்னியா மாகாணத்தில் ஒரு அன்பினற்செல்வி(lesbian) தம்பதியினருக்கு ஒரு பால் திருமண உரிமத்தினை வழங்கினார். மேலும் சண் ஜோஸ் நகர சபை , நகர ஊழியர்களுக்காக பிற சட்ட அமைப்புகள் அங்கீகரித்த ஒருபால் திருமணங்களை அங்கீகரிப்பது என்ற தீர்மானத்தையும் கொண்டு வந்தது. இத்தகு நடவடிக்கைகள் கலிபோர்னியா உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்தின் கண்டனத்திற்கு உள்ளாகியது .

ஆனால் .2005 ஆம் ஆண்டு இன் ரீ திருமண(In Re marriage) வழக்கில் உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்தின் தீர்பானது கலிபோர்னியா சட்டம் சிரத்து ஒன்று பிரிவு ஏழின் படி (article 1,section 7) "திருமணம் என்பது மக்களின் அடிப்படை உரிமையாகும் " என்பதனை சுட்டிக்காட்டி, ஒரு பால் திருமணங்களை அங்கீகரித்தது. இது ஜூன் 16,2008 இல் நடைமுறைக்கு வந்தது. ஆனால் சிரத்து ஓன்று, பிரிவு ஏழில் புதிதாக நிபந்தனை 7.5 இணை கொண்டுவர வேண்டும் என்று , பிரேரேபணை 8 (Proposition 8) என்ற புது மாறுதலை நிர்பந்தித்து. இதன் படி " ஒரு ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் இடையே உள்ள திருமணம் மட்டுமே கலிபோர்னியா மாகாணத்தில் அங்கீகரிக்கப்படும்" என்ற விதியினை சேர்க்க வலியுறுத்தியது. நவம்பர் 4 ஆம் தேதி இந்த சட்டம் கலிபோர்னியா மாகாண உச்ச நீதிமன்றத்தால் நிறைவேற்றபட்டது . உடனடியாக நவம்பர் 5 தேதி ஒருபால் திருமணங்கள் தடை செய்யப்பட்டன.

ஆனால் முன்பு அங்கீகரிகப்பட்ட ஒரே பால் ஈர்ப்புடயோர் திருமணங்களுக்கு இந்த புது சட்டத்தால் எந்த வித பாதிப்பும் ஏற்படாது என்று முன்மொழியப்பட்டது. திருப்புமுனையாக ஆகஸ்ட் 4,2010 நீதிபதி வால்கர் , ஒரு பால் திருமணம் மீது பிரேரேபணை 8(Proposition 8) விதித்த தடை ,சட்ட சாசனத்திற்கு எதிரானது என்ற தீர்ப்பினை அளித்தார். ஆனால் அதற்கு மேல் முறையீடு செய்வதற்கு தடா விதிக்கப்பட்டது. மேயர் அர்நால்ட் மற்றும் அரசு வழக்கறிஞர் ஜெர்ரி பிரவுன் , நீதிபதி வால்கரிடம் தடாவினை அகற்றுமாறு கேட்டு கொண்டதன் படி நீதிபதி வால்கர் இந்த வழக்கினை ஒன்பதாம் சுற்று முறையீடு நீதிமன்றத்திற்கு மாற்றுகையில் இந்த வழக்கு வரும் செப்டம்பர் மாதத்திற்கு ஒத்தி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
அமெரிக்காவின் புதிய ஜனாதிபதியின் தேர்வுக்கான வேலை மும்முரமாகும் நிலையில் ஒபாமா ஒருபால் திருமணங்களுக்கு விடுத்திருக்கும் ஆதரவு ,பல்வேறு காரணங்களை பின்னடக்கியுள்ளது.

கற்சுவர் கிளர்ச்சி

ஹார்வே மில்க்
உலகில் முதல் முதலில் நியூயோர்க்கில் ஒருபால் ஈர்புடயோருக்காக எழுந்த மிக பெரும் கற்சுவர் கிளர்ச்சியிலிருந்து (stonewall riots) , ஒருபால் ஈர்புடயோர் சமூகத்திலிருந்து வெளிப்படையாக முதல் முறை அமெரிக்க அரசியலில் உயர் பதவி வகித்த ஹார்வே மில்க்கின் புரட்சி வரை, அமெரிக்க அரசின் கைகளில் இவ்விஷயம் பகடைகளாகத்தான் உள்ளது.1996 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஒருபால் ஈர்ப்புடயோரின் திருமணத்தை ஆதரித்த ஒபாமா, 2004 ஆம் ஆண்டு "நான் நம்புவதெல்லாம், திருமணம் என்பது ஒரு ஆணுக்கும் ஒரு பெண்ணுக்கும் இடையே நிகழ்வது" என்று மாறுபட்ட அறிக்கை விடுத்தார். இன்று குடியரசு கட்சி சார்பில் ஒபாமாவை எதிர்த்து போட்டியிடும் மிட்ட ரோம்ன கூறுவதும் இதுவே!.

Gender and sexuality issues has been widely discussed in recent times, since thedecriminalization of IPC 377, The rising consciousness of gender and sexuality isan indicator of the rising importance of gender and sexuality issues. The American college located in Madurai is a pioneer in raising the need of awareness for gender and sexuality issues. The Department of Religion-Philosophy and Sociology -... "REPHISO" conducted India's first Gender Diversity Fair a seminar cum interactive session on March, 29th on gender and sexuality diversity issues. It will be ofits first kind in India, to discuss the genders apart from men, women and transwomen to include the issues of other 20 genders like transmen, pangender, agender,androgyny, genderfluid, crossdressers,bigender,trigender,neutrois,epicene,demigirl and demiguy, girlfags and guydykes and numerous other gender varieties and even the other diversities of sexuality including pansexuals, asexual, polysexuals etc which are even unaware within the mainstream LGBTQ community itself.The seminar stressed on various issues of the diverse people of gender identity and sexual identity in sociological, philosophical, scientific and religious views.

The Principal & Secretary of the American College inaugurated the fair & delivered welcome address he said " The government, educationists and social activists should put an effort together and the change should start from the education system.” he insists that gender and sexuality education should be part of the main syllabus in high school and college. “People are ignorant about the existence of various genders and sexuality,” he says. “And due to this, for over a century, queer community have undergone a lot of ill-treatment and abuse.”

 The mainsession was conducted by the renowned transgender activist, Kalki Subramaniam, founder of Sahodari, a organization dedicatedfor the issues of transgenders. She had conducted more than 80 seminars inforeign and national universities on gender issues. Moreover she was therepresentative of the United Nations program on gender issues from India. IVLPguest for United States from India, she is an actress, writer, speaker too  she says “All we want is love, respect and dignity but when it is not given to us we tend to become rebels.” Being a member of the community she advocates for, Kalki herself faced social discrimination and abuse, yet she has gone past it. She acted in the art film “Narthagi”, and she proudly announced her next project. “I have signed up for a Malayalam commercial film for the female lead role.” A transgender woman acting in a mainstream film is a positive sign, but Kalki's expedition doesn't stop here. There are still many misconceptions about LGBT people, she said. “Our objective is to change the view and notions of the society, We aim to build a world based on equality, reciprocity, and interdependence, where people are free to express their sexuality as part of their broader human rights. Towards this aim, we advocate for policy change around issues of gender and sexuality, create spaces for people to begin to talk and think critically about the politics of gender and sexuality, and build links with other social movements. We work through active, teachers, parents, workers- who empower themselves and each other through dialogue and sharing.


&  John Marshal,Director Srishti Madurai, Coimbatore, a organization dedicated for the LGBTQ issues had presented second session on diversities of gender started the session with a question "Do you know that there are nearly 20 different types of genders other than male and female? Gender activist John, explained. “Generally the terms gender, sexuality and sex are taken to be the same. But they all mean different things,” he says. “Sex is a biological definition and gender is the self identity and also the sociocultural and behavioral perception, while sexuality refers to the sexual attraction towards a particular sex.”

Referring to various indications of alternative sexuality in the scriptures, he said, “Alternative gender or sexuality is not unnatural. It's very much natural like the usual man and woman genders and heterosexuality.” that even within the mainstream LGBT community, the existence of these many genders is largely unknown. “Some forms of genders don't even have a proper word in the dictionary and we have coined terms both in Tamil and English for a few,”.



Prof. Dr. J. Aruldoss, Vice-Principal & Head of the Department of Religion, Philosophy & Sociology delivered vote of thanks & ended the fair he thanked Kalki & John " he said" Well, India is said to be a country of rich diversity and we learn that Indians are proud of “unity in diversity”. But where this “unity in diversity “shrinks out, when come to the discussion of sexuality and gender? Why we are still reluctant to accept the wide diversity in sexuality and gender and celebrate those identities?

Think what happens if people who possessing wider diversity of sexual and gender orientation are compelled to hide their true identity and allowed to marry a person who not suits for them? so respect everyone as human. he enkindleth students towards to do research on such tasks to bring a social change.
